Carrie Elkin and Robby Hecht are sweeping across the UK…
For some reason, I always feel the need to tell you what’s familiar and what’s different about the new music I hear – so here it goes.
Robby’s voice reminds me of James Taylor’s, clear, genuine, and warm. His music is much less mainstream in sound and composition, but does invite you to sing. The lyrics are intriguing and unpredictable. Let’s face it, there’s just not a lot of that going around on the radio these days. I think I need more material to really figure out who Robby is, on the whole. But it’s nice to imagine that when he sings a love song, he might be singing about a girl I know. And I hope she is at home making vegan cupcakes that will take over the world.
Carrie has her own endearing dialect that reminds me of the way Nancy Griffith has her own, but Carrie doesn’t tip toe into song. The quality of her voice is commanding, strong, with abandon – yet, comforting as an old friend. Her songwriting style brings traditional country music to mind, but I just can’t file her there. In my mind, her songwriting style solidifies her independent, folk singer/songwriter status.
Before we headed to Camden, we joined our friend Leona for birthday drinks on the rooftop of this building, Coq D’argent. Posh.
I hope Leona had a great time and a happy extended birthday!
]]>This weekend though, with the long holiday and all, it seemed appropriate to get a cake and light the candles. Â When Drew told Emily that he secretly wished that I might surprise him with a cake this weekend, I pulled out the bakery phone number I had been holding. Â They make this dense, flourless dark chocolate cake with a thick ganache type dark chocolate icing.
I know it’s amazing. Â I know you can’t eat too many bites in one sitting. Â I know you can get a wicked chocolate/sugar buzz from the icing. Â I know that I wish I could send one to my sister for her birthday. Â What I don’t know is how they make a cake without flour; and frankly, I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to ask. Â That sounds like some kind of cake voodoo.
What’s extra funny about this whole cake experience is that Drew wanted to go to Borough Market for these great brownies made by The Cinnamon Tree Bakery. Â They are wheat and gluten free, dense like fudge, but cake-y enough to still meet the definition of a brownie. Â He ordered a few Brownies for take away so that we could stash them in the fridge his weekend enjoyment, but he didn’t know I was about to pop into Konditor & Cook for this little monster…

Basically, we have chocolate overload at our flat this weekend. Â Happy 30th Drew!
